Questions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Absolutely. BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for children because it focuses on grappling and control rather than striking. Our kids program is designed for ages 3-15 with age-appropriate techniques, close supervision, and a focus on discipline, respect, and having fun. Every class is led by experienced instructors who prioritize safety above all else.
For their first class, comfortable athletic clothing works great: a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. No zippers, buttons, or pockets. If your child continues training, we'll help you get fitted for a gi (the traditional uniform). We have loaner gis available for trial classes so you don't need to buy anything upfront.
No. BJJ will get you in shape. Most adults who walk through our door haven't trained before, and that's exactly who our classes are built for. Whether you're interested in self-defense, fitness, or competition, you'll build strength, flexibility, and cardio naturally as you train. We offer morning, midday, and evening adult BJJ classes 7 days a week so you can train on your schedule.
Adult memberships start at $179/month for 8 classes, $189/month for 12 classes, or $199/month for unlimited training. Kids memberships start at $239/month for 8 classes or $249/month unlimited. Family plans are available at $399/month. All memberships are month-to-month with no long-term contracts. Your first class is always free.
Gi training uses the traditional kimono (uniform), which allows for grips, sweeps, and chokes using the fabric. No-Gi uses rashguards and shorts. It's faster-paced and more wrestling-oriented. Both are essential for a complete BJJ game. At Labyrinth, we offer both Gi and No-Gi classes throughout the week so you can train in both styles.
We accept kids as young as 3 years old. Our Little Grapplers program (ages 3-6) focuses on coordination, listening skills, and basic movement patterns through fun, structured activities. Kids ages 7-12 progress into our full BJJ curriculum, and teens 12-15 have their own dedicated classes. Many of our youngest students have gone on to become state and national champions.
Not at all. Competition is always optional. Many of our students train purely for fitness, self-defense, confidence, and community. That said, if your child does want to compete, they'll be training at the #1 ranked academy in Texas with coaches who know how to prepare athletes for the biggest stages in the world, from local tournaments to ADCC Worlds and IBJJF Pan Ams.
Yes. Our strength and conditioning class runs Tuesday and Thursday at 4:15 PM in Fulshear and is open to all ages. Kids and adults train the same session at their own level. It is coached by Professor Shaun Lawler and focuses on athletic development: sprinting, jumping and landing, carrying, and movement quality, with load added as young athletes grow. The class is included in every membership at no extra charge. Read more about the class →
Yes, when it is supervised and programmed for their age. The long-standing worry that lifting stunts growth or damages growth plates is not supported by the research, and the major position statements from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics both support supervised youth resistance training. Injuries in youth strength training come almost entirely from unsupervised equipment and loads chosen to impress. In our class nobody trains alone and nobody maxes out, for younger kids the focus is body control, not weight on a bar.
No. Strength and conditioning is included in any Labyrinth membership at no additional cost: kids, adult, or family plans. There is no add-on fee and no separate sign-up. Your first session is free, the same as every other class here.
Just click "Try a Free Class" anywhere on this site, give us a call at (281) 393-7983, or stop by the academy. No commitment, no pressure. Show up in comfortable clothes, and we'll take care of the rest. Adult trials are available any class time. Kids trials are on Friday afternoons in the Gi for ages 3 and up, or Saturday at 10:00 AM in No-Gi for ages 7 and up.
